Edmonton Mayor demands provincial reform over Chinatown detainee drop-offs
Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack is calling on the Alberta provincial government to reform release protocols after surveillance footage showed correctional services vans dropping off former detainees in Edmonton’s Chinatown.
Recent video footage from September 2026 shows at least seven former detainees being released in a Chinatown parking lot on a Friday evening. This follows a separate incident on September 11 where a detainee was dropped off on private property. Local business owners and community leaders have expressed frustration, describing the practice as using the neighborhood as a ‘dumping ground’ and raising concerns regarding public safety and the lack of immediate support for those leaving custody.
In response to the reports, Alberta’s Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services stated it is reinforcing expectations that releases occur at appropriate public locations rather than on private property. Mayor Knack has requested a formal action plan from the province that includes specific timelines for addressing shortages in housing, mental health services, and addiction recovery to ensure individuals do not fall back into homelessness or crisis upon release.
