Edmonton Oilers appoint Mike Babcock as head coach

The Edmonton Oilers officially named Mike Babcock as their head coach on June 23, 2026 after the NHL cleared him of a 2023 investigation into alleged privacy violations while with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Babcock, 63, returns to the NHL after a hiatus since 2019 and brings a résumé that includes a Stanley Cup win with the Detroit Red Wings in 2008. The organization also added former assistant D.J. Smith as associate coach.

Team captain Connor McDavid praised the decision, saying, “It’s time for that happen in Edmonton” and noting that the players want to be challenged. He added, “The definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result,” and emphasized that the roster will need to sacrifice individually for collective success under Babcock’s leadership.
