Edmonton Oilers appoint Mike Babcock as head coach

The Edmonton Oilers announced the hiring of Mike Babcock as head coach, the first NHL game he will coach in more than six years. The NHL cleared him after an investigation into his brief 2023 tenure with the Columbus Blue Jackets, finding no basis to restrict his employment. Babcock replaces Kris Knoblauch, who was dismissed following the Oilers' first‑round playoff loss to Anaheim. Former Toronto assistant D.J. Smith was also added as associate coach.

Babcock brings a resume that includes a 2008 Stanley Cup with Detroit, two Olympic gold medals (2010, 2014) and previous stints with Anaheim, Detroit, Toronto and the Columbus Blue Jackets. His past has drawn criticism, including allegations of invasive privacy requests and bullying behavior, which former players have publicly condemned.

Despite the controversy, the Oilers have secured key free‑agents Jason Dickinson and Connor Murphy, signaling confidence that the team’s defensive focus under Babcock will complement star forwards Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The organization hopes the new coaching staff will restore a championship‑winning culture.

"I just hated coming to the rink," former player Daniel Winnik said of Babcock, underscoring the mixed perception surrounding the hire.
