Edmonton Oilers lose season opener to Vancouver Canucks

The Edmonton Oilers suffered a 6-5 overtime loss to the Vancouver Canucks in their season opener. Following the defeat, new head coach Mike Babcock described the team’s performance as ‘unacceptable,’ citing excessive puck turnovers, poor decision-making, and players staying on the ice too long.

Despite the loss, Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard recorded a five-point night, including a hat trick. He became the first NHL defenseman to record a season-opening hat trick since 1980.

Criticism was directed at goaltender Tristan Jarry, who allowed six goals, including a goal in the third period that helped shift the momentum. Jarry acknowledged there were moments where he could have performed better, while Babcock defended the player but emphasized that the team must set a higher standard to be considered serious contenders.
