Edmonton Oilers seek NHLPA clearance to hire Mike Babcock
The Edmonton Oilers are considering former Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock for the head‑coach position after firing Kris Knoblauch.
The NHL Players’ Association has formally asked the league to investigate Babcock’s previous tenure with the Columbus Blue Jackets, citing alleged privacy‑invasive requests for personal photos and a teammate‑ranking exercise that former players described as bullying.
Oiler leadership, including captains Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, personally vetted multiple candidates and reportedly favored Babcock’s hard‑nosed approach. The NHL said any investigation would proceed if the Oilers move forward with a hire. The team is also in contact with other coaches such as Craig Berube, while the Vegas Golden Knights blocked discussions with Bruce Cassidy.
