Edmonton Oilers struggle with defense and goaltending
The Edmonton Oilers are facing significant defensive and goaltending challenges at the start of the 2026-27 NHL season. Despite a high-powered offense led by Connor McDavid, the team has struggled to prevent goals, allowing 13 goals across their first two games.
Goaltender Tristan Jarry struggled in his season debut, allowing six goals on 23 shots in an overtime loss. Newcomer Devon Levi also faced difficulties, surrendering seven goals on 22 shots during a 9-7 win against the Vancouver Canucks.
Head coach Mike Babcock has taken responsibility for the team's defensive lapses, stating, “I think it’s coaching.” While the coaching staff is working to improve defensive play, players like Jake Walman and Shakir Mukhamadullin have faced individual struggles on the blue line. Defenceman Walman noted that high goal counts are a “team thing,” while Babcock emphasized the need for the roster to play better to avoid constantly chasing games.
