Edmonton's Keillor Point viewpoint threatened by erosion

Erosion is threatening Keillor Point, a popular viewpoint in Edmonton’s Belgravia neighbourhood formerly known as ‘End of the World’. The City of Edmonton reported that record-setting rainfall in June and July has worsened slope instability at the site.

The viewpoint, located above the North Saskatchewan River valley, was formalized by the city in 2019 with a staircase, handrails, and a granular trail to improve safety for visitors. This project followed years of the city attempting to restrict access to the secluded spot to prevent injuries from steep embankments and deteriorating concrete.

The current instability affects the area below Saskatchewan Drive, between 74 Avenue and 76 Avenue. The erosion issues mirror the historical loss of Keillor Road, which collapsed into the river valley due to similar forces in 1994.
