Edmund Kesting Retrospective Opens at Halle's Moritzburg Museum

A major retrospective of Dresden-born avant‑garde artist Edmund Kesting has opened at the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg in Halle. The exhibition presents 227 works drawn from 42 public and private collections, spanning Kesting’s experimental photography, his “Bildbauwerke” constructions, collages, and later paintings created between the 1920s and 1970s.

Curated by Paul Kaiser with museum director Thomas Bauer‑Friedrich, the show highlights Kesting’s unique blend of constructivist techniques and vivid colour, which had been dismissed as “degenerate” under the Nazi regime and later condemned as “formalistic” in the early GDR. The exhibition aims to reassess his contribution to modern art and bring wider recognition to a once‑overlooked figure of German avant‑garde.
