Edmundo González calls for reconstruction of Venezuela's historical memory

He stated that understanding the experiences of all citizens is essential for social healing and democratic progress.

These remarks follow the full release of Judge María Lourdes Afiuni, whose legal case was definitively closed after 16 years. Afiuni's prosecution began in 2009 following a demand for the "maximum penalty" by former President Hugo Chávez after she released businessman Eligio Cedeño.

Throughout her imprisonment, Afiuni faced conditions described as inhumane by international human rights organizations, including reports of torture and sexual abuse. Her case became a symbol of judicial persecution in Venezuela, as she was later convicted of "spiritual corruption," a charge critics argued had no basis in penal law.
