Edo State electricity restored as Governor Okpebholo and NLC resolve dispute

Electricity supply has been restored in Edo State, Nigeria, following the resolution of a labor dispute between Governor Monday Okpebholo and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). The agreement was reached during a closed-door meeting in Abuja convened by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

The dispute centered on the recognition of the state's NLC caretaker committee. Under the new agreement, the Edo State Government will recognize the caretaker committee and collaborate with labor leaders to conduct substantive elections within three to six months.

The resolution follows a period of significant power outages that impacted both public and private institutions in the state. The blackout was linked to two primary issues: an industrial disagreement between the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) regarding wages and welfare, and the leadership dispute involving the NLC caretaker committee.
