Edo State road infrastructure faces challenges as Owan axis route deteriorates
The Iruekpen–Ozalla–Sabo Road in the Owan axis of Edo State has severely deteriorated, causing heavy-duty trucks to become stuck in deep mud and leaving motorists stranded. The poor condition of the road is reportedly hindering economic activities, as farmers struggle to transport produce and businesses face increased costs and vehicle damage.
Questions have been raised regarding the effectiveness of previous interventions on the route, including projects reportedly funded through Sukuk. Critics are calling for urgent action from both the Edo State Government, under Governor Monday Okpebholo, and the Federal Ministry of Works.
Governor Okpebholo has made road rehabilitation a central pillar of his administration's agenda, promising to address the state's infrastructure deficit. His policy focuses on constructing roads, drainages, and bridges to improve connectivity between rural and urban communities and neighboring states, regardless of whether the roads fall under state or federal jurisdiction.
