Edo State shuts unregistered Jess Royal Hospital

The Edo State Healthcare Regulation and Monitoring Agency (EDOHERMA) has ordered the immediate closure of Jess Royal Hospital in Benin. The facility had reportedly operated for over 10 years without statutory registration with either the Edo State Ministry of Health or EDOHERMA.

The discovery occurred during a monitoring exercise at an orphanage located in the same building. EDOHERMA CEO Dr. Adesuwa Urhoghide-Edigin noted that while the owner claimed membership in the Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners (ANPMP), such membership does not constitute legal authorization to operate a healthcare facility in the state.

A follow-up inspection led by Dr. Peter Evbuomwan revealed significant operational deficiencies, including poor infection prevention and control, rusted equipment, damaged mattresses, and a lack of routine pest control. The facility also lacked valid fire extinguishers, an emergency preparedness plan, and an established referral system.
