Edo State violence leaves three dead and 15 arrested

Three people have died and 15 suspects have been arrested following separate violent incidents in the Sobe and Ewatto communities of Edo State on Sunday, August 23, 2026.

In Sobe, the violence began after youths allegedly attacked the residence and vehicles of a resident, Ojo Gabriel. When police detectives and Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) personnel arrived to respond to the report of assault and malicious damage, they were attacked by the youths. During the confrontation, a police patrol vehicle was damaged and two locally made single-barrel guns were stolen from security personnel.

Three ESSC members—Tunde Ali, Izedu Monday, and Charles Ighororo—sustained serious injuries and are receiving medical treatment. One unidentified youth died while receiving treatment at David and Stella Hospital in Sabongida-Ora after sustaining pellet injuries during the clash. The Edo State Police Command confirmed that eleven suspects have been arrested in connection with the Sobe incident and the stolen firearms have been recovered.
