Edo State youths confront police over alleged extortion

A group of youths in Edo State, Nigeria, confronted police officers and members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) at a checkpoint along the Auchi-Aviele road. The confrontation occurred after the youths received reports that the officers were extorting motorists and cyclists.

A viral video shows the youths searching the officers, including those armed, after accusing them of collecting bribes. The youth leader reported that the group had already collected N4,200 from motorcyclists and other road users within 30 minutes of setting up the roadblock.

The leader stated his intention to hand the retrieved money over to the Area Commander and called on the Commissioner of Police to investigate the DPO of the Agbede Police Station, alleging that the officers claimed to be acting under orders from the DPO.
