French presidential candidates propose major education reforms
As the 2027 French presidential election approaches, candidates Gabriel Attal and Édouard Philippe have unveiled competing education platforms. Attal, representing Renaissance, proposes a programming law to stabilize the education system under a minister serving a five-year term. His plan includes reinstating the 'certificat d'études' at the start of middle school, making the 'brevet' mandatory for high school entry, and providing an immediate net monthly salary increase of 200 euros for teachers, potentially rising to 500 euros for mid-career professionals.
Édouard Philippe, representing Horizons, has proposed a 20% average increase in teacher remuneration over five years to align with European standards. He also advocates for a 'school responsibility fine' to sanction parents of disruptive, absent, or violent students. To ensure stability, Philippe suggests increasing school autonomy and reducing class sizes by leveraging demographic declines.
Separately, Education Minister Édouard Geffray announced a new initiative to combat sexual and gender-based violence. An annual questionnaire will be expanded to include questions on these topics for approximately 10 million students, from kindergarten to high school. The minister noted that one in ten children in France is a victim of sexual violence and highlighted that the National Education system issued 88,000 alerts regarding such violence or parental failures last year.
