EDP and Paper Prime launch industrial heat electrification project

EDP and Paper Prime have launched an industrial heat electrification project in Portugal. The initiative involves the installation of a 2.7 MW electric boiler at Paper Prime’s industrial unit in Vila Velha de Rodão.

The system is designed to replace a portion of natural gas consumption with electricity for the production of steam required in the paper manufacturing process. This transition aims to decarbonize one of the most energy-intensive components of the paper industry. In its first three months of operation, the solution reduced natural gas consumption by more than 4.5 GWh and avoided over 830 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

The technology allows for flexible management between electricity and natural gas, enabling the facility to adapt to energy market conditions. By utilizing electricity during periods when prices are more competitive than natural gas, the company can reduce exposure to market volatility without compromising industrial safety or continuity.
