Edson Fachin maintains STF session to investigate Alexandre de Moraes
Edson Fachin, president of the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF), is proceeding with a scheduled plenary session to address a request by Minister André Mendonça to investigate Alexandre de Moraes. The request follows reports regarding alleged suspicious links between Moraes and banker Daniel Vorcaro.
Despite warnings from fellow ministers regarding the risk of a request for a stay (pedido de vista) that could stall the decision, Fachin intends to maintain the session as a public, physical plenary meeting. Fachin has held individual meetings with ministers and the Prosecutor General to define the session's procedures, including whether Moraes will have the right to a defense or legal counsel.
There is significant internal tension within the Court. Supporters of Moraes argue for the immediate dismissal of the investigation, claiming Mendonça bypassed proper procedures by requesting a Federal Police inquiry without prior plenary approval. Conversely, Moraes has characterized Mendonça’s actions as politically motivated and persecutory.
