Edson Fachin reviews fake news inquiry and dismisses request against Moraes
Edson Fachin, President of the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF), is conducting a comprehensive review of 104 procedures linked to the long-running fake news inquiry. This investigation, which has been active for over seven years under Justice Alexandre de Moraes, is facing a transition period as Fachin assumes the role of rapporteur. The review aims to organize and digitize materials to determine which cases require further investigation by the Federal Police and the Prosecutor General's Office (PGR) before the inquiry can be officially closed.
In a separate procedural development, Fachin dismissed a request to investigate Justice Alexandre de Moraes and remove him from office. The request, filed by lawyers Paulo Faria and Filipe de Oliveira, alleged misconduct regarding communications between Moraes and a businessman. However, Fachin archived the petition without addressing the merits of the accusations, ruling that the authors lacked the legal standing to submit such requests directly to the Supreme Court. He noted that citizens cannot bypass the Public Prosecutor's Office to demand the Court investigate crimes.
