Edson Álvarez denies involvement in alleged Mexico kidnapping

Edson Álvarez, captain of the Mexico national football team and midfielder for West Ham United, has categorically denied allegations linking him to a 2024 kidnapping in Mexico City.

The accusations stem from claims made by film producer Juan José López Ordóñez, who alleged he was abducted at gunpoint in the Polanco district. Ordóñez claimed the incident involved the family of Álvarez’s former father-in-law, Jonathan Toache Bedolla, and suggested the footballer had knowledge of the plot. The producer stated the dispute arose from unpaid fees, approximately 3.5 million pesos (around $200,000), related to a documentary project about Álvarez’s career.

In a social media statement, the 28-year-old athlete rejected all claims, stating his name has been used to generate media attention without evidence. Álvarez criticized the reporting as sensationalist and indicated that he is consulting legal counsel to take action against those spreading false accusations. He emphasized that serious allegations should be handled by authorities and courts rather than through media statements.
