Edson Álvarez Nears Loan Move to Bundesliga Club FC Köln

Mexican midfielder Edson Álvarez, currently on the books of West Ham United, has reached a principle agreement for a season‑long loan with an option to buy by 1. FC Köln in the German Bundesliga. The deal, slated for the 2026/27 season, remains subject to a revised salary arrangement that the player must accept.

Álvarez, 28, left West Ham after the club’s relegation from the Premier League prompted a rapid reduction of high‑wage contracts. The Mexican international, who featured for Mexico at the 2026 World Cup before the team’s round‑of‑16 exit to England, is said to have already examined Köln’s facilities, fans and city. He faces competition from Turkish clubs, but reports indicate he is willing to sacrifice part of his earnings to stay in Europe.

If finalized, Álvarez would debut for Köln in August 2026 during the league’s opening match against Werder Bremen, marking a significant move for a player who was previously linked with Borussia Dortmund in 2023.
