Eduarda Campopiano faces legal complaint after Alesp election

Eduarda Campopiano, the most voted candidate for the São Paulo Legislative Assembly (Alesp) with over 1.9 million votes, is facing legal and political scrutiny following her election.

Sofia Favero of the PSOL party has filed a complaint with the São Paulo State Public Prosecutor’s Office against Campopiano. The complaint alleges transphobia, transphobic insult, and gender-based political violence after Campopiano referred to re-elected federal deputy Erika Hilton as a “biological man” on social media. Campopiano has defended the post as a “provocative manifestation” within a political debate.

Campopiano, a 23-year-old member of the Liberal Party (PL), has drawn attention for her conservative stances, including public opposition to feminism and her claim that “feminicide does not exist,” describing the term as a “semantic trap.” Additionally, an investigation by BBC News Brasil found that 14 of 20 legislative projects presented by Campopiano during her time as a councillor in Praia Grande contained text copied from other lawmakers.

As she prepares to take her seat in Alesp, her former positions in the Praia Grande City Council will be filled by alternates Marcel Farias and Fábio Mello.
