Eduarda Campopiano election sparks political tension in São Paulo

Eduarda Campopiano, the most voted candidate for the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo, has sparked debate regarding political indoctrination in schools. Campopiano, representing the PL party, stated that schools are not places for politics and argued that her election reflects a movement to protect youth from what she described as communist indoctrination.

Federal Deputy Érika Hilton (PSOL-SP) responded to Campopiano’s election, characterizing it as a direct threat to transgender rights and an attempt to stall progress on issues of dignity and citizenship. Hilton criticized Campopiano for lacking substantive proposals to address social issues such as rising feminicide and violence. The tension follows social media exchanges where Campopiano referred to Hilton, a trans woman, as a ‘biological man’.
