Eduardo Bolsonaro sentenced to prison by Brazilian Supreme Court
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has issued an arrest warrant for former federal lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro. The court convicted the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro of coercion in judicial proceedings and obstruction of justice.
The conviction follows findings that Eduardo Bolsonaro lobbied the United States government to impose sanctions against Brazilian officials and increase tariffs on Brazilian exports. This activity was reportedly intended to pressure the judiciary regarding the legal cases involving his father, who was previously sentenced for his role in an alleged plot to overturn the 2022 election.
Eduardo Bolsonaro has been sentenced to four years and two months in a semi-open prison regime. The ruling also includes the cancellation of his Brazilian passport and the suspension of his political rights. As Eduardo Bolsonaro currently resides in the United States, the execution of the warrant may require international cooperation and extradition processes.
The judicial decision arrives during a period of high political tension, occurring less than three weeks before the October 25 presidential runoff election, where Senator Flávio Bolsonaro is set to face President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
