Eduardo Calcagno, prominent Argentine filmmaker, dies at 85

Argentine filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, and critic Eduardo ‘Eddie’ Calcagno has passed away at the age of 85. His death was confirmed by the Asociación Argentina de Actores.

Born in Buenos Aires in 1941, Calcagno began his career in the 1960s as a film critic and journalist for various print, radio, and television media. He later transitioned into production and direction, making his directorial debut with the short film ‘El diablo sin dama’, which competed at the 1970 Cannes Film Festival.

His notable filmography includes ‘Fuiste mía un verano’, ‘Nunca dejes de empujar’, ‘Antonio’, ‘Los enemigos’, ‘Te amo’, ‘El censor’, ‘Yepeto’, ‘El salto de Christian’, and ‘Ulises, un alma desbordada’. He maintained a significant professional relationship with actor Ulises Dumont, whom he directed in five films.

Beyond his creative work, Calcagno was a dedicated educator and industry advocate. He served as president of Directores Argentinos Cinematográficos and spent over fifteen years working with the INCAA ‘Historias Breves’ contest to support emerging filmmakers. He was also active in defending professional and authorial rights within the national audiovisual industry.
