Eduardo Ceballos marks 100 days in Cuban detention

Eduardo ‘Eddy’ Ceballos, the creator of the satirical YouTube channel Despingovery Channel, has reached 100 days in detention in Cuba without a scheduled trial date. His arrest followed the release of a video on May 24 that featured footage of an abandoned military installation in Havana, including Cold War-era bunkers and decommissioned Soviet missiles.

Authorities initially considered charges of trespassing on military property, though legal observers noted this charge does not exist in the current penal code. The investigation subsequently shifted to Article 116 of the Penal Code, concerning the ‘revelation of secrets concerning State Security.’ The case is being processed through the military court system.

Ceballos’ mother, Marieta Pérez Alfaro, has expressed distress over his isolation and the lack of legal transparency, describing his experience as one of ‘waiting, anxiety, uncertainty, and pain.’ The family has also raised concerns regarding his treatment in custody, including allegations of physical abuse and restrictions on visitation rights.
