Eduardo Cunha faces candidacy annulment request over amendment misuse
The Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL) has filed a request with the Electoral Court to annul the candidacy of Eduardo Cunha for federal deputy in Minas Gerais. The party alleges political and economic abuse of power, claiming Cunha improperly used communication channels and parliamentary amendments to strengthen his pre-campaign.
The request is supported by Federal Police reports and a decision by Supreme Federal Court Minister Flávio Dino. These documents suggest that despite not holding office since 2016, Cunha allegedly directed R$ 6.15 million in amendments to various municipalities in Minas Gerais to favor his political interests. Federal Police investigations identified 29 such transfers.
In his mandatory financial disclosure for the upcoming election, Cunha declared assets totaling approximately R$ 14.1 million. The bulk of this wealth, roughly R$ 12.5 million, is held in a judicial account at Caixa Econômica. This declaration is largely consistent with his 2022 filing. However, R$ 6.15 million of his assets have been frozen by Minister Dino as part of the ongoing investigation into the irregular direction of parliamentary funds.
