Eduardo Frei supports Chile joining the Shield of the Americas

Former Chilean President Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle has expressed strong support for Chile's adherence to the Shield of the Americas, a multilateral initiative designed to combat transnational organized crime and drug trafficking. In a public letter, Frei argued that Chile cannot face regional criminal networks in isolation and emphasized that the mechanism provides essential tools for intelligence sharing, police training, and improved border control.

This stance creates a significant political divide, as it directly contradicts the positions of former presidents Gabriel Boric and Michelle Bachelet. Boric, speaking at the Festival of Memory, criticized the move, arguing that the initiative extends beyond anti-narcotics efforts to include economic and diplomatic commitments that could jeopardize Chile's strategic autonomy and long-standing foreign policy principles.

While the government of President José Antonio Kast maintains that the Shield is a non-binding mechanism intended to strengthen regional resilience, critics and former leaders have raised concerns regarding its impact on national sovereignty and the lack of parliamentary scrutiny. The debate highlights a growing fracture in Chilean political consensus regarding international security cooperation and multilateralism.
