Eduardo Monfort Bolufer, former mayor of Xàbia, dies at 68
Eduardo Monfort Bolufer, a prominent political figure in Xàbia, has passed away at the age of 68. Monfort served two distinct terms as mayor of the municipality: first in 1999, and again from 2005 to 2011 leading the Bloc-Centristes coalition.
During his tenure, Monfort was instrumental in the construction and inauguration of the local desalination plant, a critical infrastructure project that addressed chronic water shortages in the region. His administration also focused on urban planning reforms, including the suspension of the 1990 PGOU to prevent excessive housing and golf course developments, as well as the protection of the coastline and local landscapes like Saladar.
Monfort's political career saw him transition from Alianza Popular to the CDS and eventually to centrist and progressive positions. He was known for opposing the expansion of the local port and resisting increases in cadastral values. His public life was marked by significant local impact, though he withdrew from the political scene in 2017 following the tragic death of his son in a cycling accident.
