Eduardo Vilarete, Colombian football striker, dies at 73

Colombian football is mourning the death of Eduardo Emilio Vilarete, a prominent striker who passed away on October 9, 2026, at the age of 73 in Bogotá. His death followed a battle with a sarcoma, a type of cancer that had led to the amputation of his left leg in August.

Vilarete was a prolific scorer, recording over 200 official goals throughout his professional career. He played for several major Colombian clubs, including Atlético Nacional, where he won league titles in 1976 and 1981, Atlético Bucaramanga, Deportes Tolima, Unión Magdalena, and Deportivo Pereira. His international career included stints with Liga de Quito and Audaz Octubrino in Ecuador, as well as Deportivo Pacífico in Peru.

He also represented the Colombian national team between 1976 and 1985, earning 20 caps and scoring seven goals, including appearances in the 1979 Copa América and World Cup qualifiers for the 1978 and 1982 tournaments.

Per his final wishes, his funeral services will be held in Ibagué, followed by a memorial service in his birthplace, Santa Marta.
