Education Advocates Call for Ban on Google AI Search in Schools

The child‑safety group Common Sense Media released a report warning that Google’s AI‑powered Search, known as AI Mode, poses an "unacceptable risk" to students of all ages. The study says the feature can expose learners to inaccurate, generative‑AI content, encourage cheating and give a false sense of authority because the responses appear as vetted information.

Advocates are urging school districts to stop using Google products until the AI functions can be turned off, noting that Google does not currently allow the AI mode to be disabled for education accounts while still providing search access. Millions of K‑12 and higher‑education users rely on Google daily, and the report highlights that the AI tools lack the age‑gating present in other Google education offerings.

Officials such as Robbie Torney, senior director of AI programs at Common Sense Media, and Amanda Bickerstaff, deputy director for AI in Education, recommend schools seek verified sources rather than automated answers, and call for an immediate review of Google’s role in classrooms.
