Education costs drive high school expenses and property premiums

New research highlights the significant financial impact of education-related expenses on families in the United Kingdom and Australia.

In the UK, Nationwide reports that parents can expect to spend more than £15,500 on hidden costs throughout a child’s school career. The largest expense is school clubs, which average £700 annually and can total £9,100 over a child's education. Parents utilize these clubs for skill development, extracurricular passions, and as a form of childcare. Other notable costs include school uniforms and sports kits, which average £381, and school trips, which average £116.

In Australia, data from Cotality shows that families are paying significant property premiums to secure placement in desirable Sydney school catchment zones. In areas such as Rose Bay/Randwick and Killara/Lindfield, median house values within specific high school catchment zones are approximately $1 million higher than properties located just outside the boundaries. For instance, the median house value in the Rose Bay/Randwick catchment was $4,339,810, compared to $2,783,174 for properties outside the zone.
