Education costs rise in Senegal as private school fees soar
Educational costs across Africa vary significantly due to differences in state funding and private sector pricing. While some nations provide state-funded education, others rely heavily on private institutions, creating socio-economic disparities in access to quality schooling.
In Senegal, rising costs in private institutions have sparked public concern. Investigations show that annual tuition in the most expensive schools can exceed 18 million CFA francs, a figure vastly higher than local neighborhood private schools. Families have reported increasing registration fees and monthly tuition hikes.
In response to these rising costs, educators and parents have called for greater government oversight. Legal frameworks, such as the interministerial decree from March 2023, exist to regulate pricing and ensure transparency, yet many families continue to struggle with the combined burden of tuition, supplies, and transportation.
