In Slovenia, the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth has reported an alarming budget deficit of approximately 133 million euros expected by the end of the year. The largest portion of this shortfall, 111.6 million euros, affects primary and secondary schools. Higher education faces a 21.3 million euro deficit, which includes 20 million euros for legal funding obligations and 1.3 million euros for the FAIR research infrastructure in Darmstadt. Minister Borut Rončević stated that the ministry is working with the Ministry of Finance to ensure legal obligations are met without halting investment projects.

Meanwhile, in the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Education has allocated nearly 10 billion CZK for institutional science support to universities for 2026. This funding is part of a larger plan to distribute 60 billion CZK in institutional support through 2030. Unlike project-based grants, this institutional funding is intended to provide a predictable financial foundation for universities to maintain research infrastructure and staff.
