Education in Brazil: Balancing AI, life skills, and rising Ideb scores
Educational discussions in Brazil are emphasizing the need for holistic development that transcends academic testing and the rise of artificial intelligence. While AI offers new tools, educators and families are urged to focus on fostering cultural, social, and emotional intelligence to prepare future citizens.
In the Grande ABC region, recent Ideb (Basic Education Development Index) data for 2025 shows performance exceeding both the state of São Paulo and national averages. For the initial years of elementary school, the regional average rose to 6.7, compared to 6.6 in São Paulo and 6.1 nationally. Final years of elementary school reached 5.3, surpassing the state's 5.2 and the national 5.0. High school averages also saw a slight increase to 4.6, higher than the state's 4.3 and the national 4.3.
Beyond metrics, there is a growing call to prioritize life skills such as autonomy, discipline, and resilience. Experts suggest that learning occurs through managing routines, handling errors, and engaging in extracurricular activities like sports and arts, which help develop concentration and responsibility more effectively than traditional classroom instruction alone.
