Education Minister urges schools to follow heat protocols

Minister of Education and Science Vesna Janevska has urged schools to strictly adhere to established protocols regarding high temperatures during the school year. The protocols, which are available on the Ministry’s website, dictate how educational activities should be adjusted to manage heat.

Janevska noted that while climate change presents a global challenge, it should not prevent children from learning. Instead, school administrations and teachers are expected to adapt activities; for example, replacing physical education with music or art during extreme heat. The protocols also provide guidance on window management and student activities.

Regarding the installation of air conditioning, the Minister stated that the state is working on providing units to schools based on priority levels as resources allow. In the Aerodrom municipality, officials confirmed that schools follow the guidelines set by the Ministry and the Public Health Center, noting that lesson durations are only shortened during a ‘yellow phase’ of heat warnings.
