Education Minister Ute Eiling-Hütig Credits Women's Solidarity for Career Rise

Ute Eiling‑Hütig, the newly appointed education minister of the German state of Rhineland‑Palatinate, describes her unconventional path to politics as shaped by strong female support. Born in North‑Rhine Westphalia, she studied ancient history, classical archaeology and medieval history at the University of Münster and originally aimed to become a librarian.

After moving to Bavaria with her partner, she worked in corporate adult education, a field she still values. Her first foray into elected office came when she was asked to run for mayor in her new town, a race she lost by 82 votes. She later served as personal assistant to CSU state‑parliament member Ursula Männle, whom she calls her "political mother," before being selected for the ministerial post. Eiling‑Hütig says the network of women she encountered – mentors, colleagues and friends – was decisive in her ascent and continues to influence her work in the education ministry.
