Schools reopen across the Balkans and Central Europe
The new school year has commenced across various regions, marked by both celebratory milestones and systemic challenges. In Montenegro, the opening of the new Sveti Sava Gymnasium in Podgorica serves as a significant example of cooperation between the church and the state. Meanwhile, in Herceg Novi, local authorities provided school supplies to 295 first-grade students.
In the Czech Republic, 278 first-graders began their studies in Vsetín. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the start of the year has highlighted long-standing issues in the Republika Srpska education system, including low teacher salaries and political pressures. In Tuzla, the city provided gift packages to 890 young students to mark the occasion.
Logistical and social issues also emerged. In Serbia, the municipality of Pećinci established new bus lines to ensure students can reach schools in Stara Pazova. In Slovenia, the tradition of 'fazaniranje' (student hazing) drew criticism from state officials, and reports surfaced of discarded state-issued constitution booklets in Postojna. In Croatia, Istra County announced plans to subsidize bus travel for high school students to ease the financial burden on families.
