Educational infrastructure and resource concerns in Helsinki and Mikkeli

In Helsinki, city councilors have expressed concerns regarding the situation at Medialukio in the Tapulikaupunki district. As the school prepares to expand to approximately 1,200 students due to the construction of a new building relocated from Pikku-Finlandia, officials are calling for improved operating conditions. Proposed measures include halting student growth, reducing group sizes, and increasing resources for teaching and learning support. Additionally, there are calls to investigate the need for a security guard and increased surveillance at the school, which has seen low matriculation rates.

In Mikkeli, the city board is seeking statements regarding a proposed service network solution for early childhood education and schooling in the eastern region. A working group has proposed constructing a new campus on the eastern shore of Savilahti in the Paukkula area. This project would include a primary school for approximately 450 students and a 150-place daycare center, alongside a new 70-place daycare to replace the current Tikanpelto facility. The plan aims to consolidate existing schools and daycares to ensure long-term economic sustainability and service accessibility as student numbers are projected to decrease in the coming years.
