Educational initiatives launched to improve reading literacy in Germany and Austria

Educational organizations in Germany and Austria are launching new initiatives to combat declining reading motivation and literacy among children.

In Germany, the Bundesverband Leseförderung has announced a new funding program offering ten grants of 500 euros each. These funds are intended for BVL members to implement creative, extracurricular reading projects in primary schools for children aged 6 to 11. The program aims to foster a love for reading, storytelling, and discovery through flexible use of funds for books, materials, or creative formats.

In Austria, Leontopodium Education GmbH and the Vienna Chamber of Commerce presented a study regarding reading comprehension. The study, based on feedback from 100 teachers, highlights significant challenges in reading motivation among 10- to 14-year-olds. Data indicates that while girls are perceived to read substantially better than boys, even high-performing readers are showing a decline in proficiency. To address this, the LEKO initiative is providing new teaching materials and reading motivation sets to the first 250 participating schools.
