Educational initiatives promote democracy in German schools

Students in Germany are participating in various educational programs designed to foster democratic engagement and political understanding.

In Saxony, ninth-grade students from the Goethegymnasium in Leipzig conducted a simulated parliamentary session at the Saxon State Parliament in Dresden. The exercise focused on a legislative proposal regarding lowering the voting age to 16. Students organized into pro, contra, neutral, and press factions, participating in committee meetings and a plenary debate before holding a final vote.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, the Göttschied Primary School opened the 21st statewide Democracy Day in Ingelheim. As a model school for democracy and participation, students provided a musical opening and participated in a stage discussion with Ingelheim Mayor Eveline Breyer. The event also marked the first Democracy Day for the state's new Education Minister, Dr. Ute Eiling-Hütig.
