Educational initiatives promote reading engagement in Chile and Peru

In Chile, the Universidad San Sebastián (USS) Patagonia campus has launched Nidos Lectores, a collaborative community engagement project. The initiative aims to strengthen the connection between children and reading by providing families with tools to support learning outside the classroom. The project works with four municipal schools in Puerto Montt, utilizing inclusive resources and community storytelling to foster literacy skills.

In Peru, Vice Minister of Pedagogical Management Miriam Ponce Vértiz has proposed adopting a 24/7 library model inspired by the National Library of El Salvador (BINAES). During an official visit, Ponce Vértiz highlighted how the Salvadoran model provides public access to culture and recreation beyond standard working and school hours. The proposal seeks to implement similar high-quality public spaces in Peru to ensure families can access educational and cultural services more flexibly.
