Educational initiatives target school nutrition in Spain and Nicaragua
Educational and health authorities in Spain and Nicaragua are implementing initiatives to improve nutritional habits among schoolchildren.
In the Valencian Community, Spain, a report by the Colegio Oficial de Dietistas-Nutricionistas de la Comunitat Valenciana (CODiNuCoVa) reveals that 90% of families support having dietitians in schools. Additionally, 86% of families favor a more sustainable and healthy school dining model, while 97% support menus featuring local products. CODiNuCoVa has proposed reinforcing food education through specialized professionals and teacher training.
In Nicaragua, the Ministry of Education (MINED), in collaboration with the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP), has launched a virtual course on nutritional food education and school gardens. Conducted via the Universidad Nacional de Managua (UdeM), the three-month program targets educators and technical staff. The curriculum covers food security, school gardens, nutrition, and the impact of healthy eating, while also integrating innovative projects like tilapia cultivation and the regulation of school kiosks.
