Educational innovation and school choice trends expand

Educational landscapes are shifting toward personalized learning models to meet diverse student needs. Alternative education programs, including charter schools, homeschooling, and Montessori programs, offer flexible schedules and specialized curricula that differ from traditional school settings.

In the United States, school choice policies are expanding. Currently, 34 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico have implemented versions of private school choice, allowing state-allocated funding to follow students to their preferred educational environments. Since 2020, more than a dozen states have adopted universal school choice.

In Alabama, the CHOOSE Act is set to expand options for more than 34,000 students for the 2026-27 school year. These policy shifts are also fostering educator-led entrepreneurship and the rise of microschools, which aim to provide individualized instruction tailored to each student's specific level.
