Educational institutions face pushback over AI integration

Educational institutions in North America are facing varying degrees of pushback regarding the integration of artificial intelligence. In British Columbia, the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) is calling for enforceable safeguards and greater accountability from technology companies. A survey of over 4,400 teachers revealed that more than 80 per cent are concerned that students may become overly dependent on AI or suffer a decline in critical-thinking skills. BCTF President Carole Gordon emphasized that AI should support rather than replace educators, noting that technology cannot replicate professional judgment.

In the United States, Suffolk University has encountered significant student and alumni opposition following the announcement of a new AI co-major. A petition against the program garnered 1,500 signatures, with critics citing concerns over ethics and a lack of administrative transparency. While 91 per cent of employers view AI skills as important for graduates, many students remain wary of the technology’s environmental impacts, data privacy, and potential for intellectual theft.
