Educational policy shifts in Austria and Germany
In Austria, the transition from the former 'Bildungskarenz' model to the new 'Weiterbildungszeit' has resulted in a significant decline in applications. Data from the Public Employment Service (AMS) shows that in August, only 218 applications for training assistance were processed, compared to 2,481 in August 2024. This reduction is attributed to stricter eligibility requirements, a higher rejection rate of approximately 50 percent, and a new requirement for employers to contribute 15 percent of the training allowance.
In Germany, the Bundesrat has approved a motion from Saxony aimed at reducing the number of recognized vocational training occupations. Currently, Germany recognizes 324 training occupations along with numerous specializations and focus areas. The initiative seeks to streamline the dual vocational training system to make it more navigable for young people and more efficient for businesses and vocational schools by consolidating various specialties into core professions.
