Educational reforms and learning trends emerge in Chile and Ecuador
Educational trends and reforms are gaining focus in South America, highlighting different approaches to student development. In Chile, PISA 2025 data reveals that 59% of 15-year-olds do not meet basic mathematics standards and 38% struggle with reading. Despite these gaps, Chilean students show a strong connection with teachers, with 86.3% reporting that educators show interest in their learning—a figure significantly higher than the OECD average of 68%. However, challenges remain regarding classroom climate, as 43% of students perceive tension and 21% experience recurring bullying.
In Ecuador, a new competency-based national curriculum has entered its pilot phase in the Azuay, Cañar, and Morona Santiago regions. This model shifts focus from rote memorization toward comprehension and practical application through three pillars: knowing, doing, and being. The curriculum aims to develop seven key competencies, including digital, socio-emotional, and scientific skills, to prepare students for real-world challenges and promote peaceful conflict resolution.
