Educational systems in Germany and Austria face structural challenges

Recent studies in Germany and Austria highlight systemic challenges within the educational and childcare sectors. In Germany, a survey of approximately 5,000 daycare managers conducted by the VBE and FLEET Education reveals significant structural strain. Over half of the managers report that their actual working hours for leadership tasks exceed their contractual agreements. VBE Federal Chairman Tomi Neckov noted that the system relies on leaders constantly exceeding their limits, contributing to a situation where nearly 40 percent of managers would not recommend the profession.

The report also identifies poor transition structures between daycare and primary school, with 40 percent of managers reporting cooperation with schools occurs only once or twice a year.

In Austria, long-term research by the IHS indicates that educational success remains heavily influenced by parental education levels. Analyzing data from over 85,000 students over a 17-year period, the study found that by age 13, 65 percent of children from academic backgrounds attend higher secondary schools (AHS), compared to only 11 percent of children whose parents have a maximum of compulsory education. Study author Mario Steiner suggests that expanding all-day school formats could help address these disparities in educational opportunity.
