Educational trends show record enrollment in Nicaragua and shortages in Chile

Nicaragua's public universities have reached a record enrollment of 205,000 students, according to Bismarck Santana, the technical secretary for University Attention. The government plans to provide 70,000 spots for the 2027 academic year across 13 universities and more than 60 locations. The educational model includes 130 degree programs offered for free, with various modalities such as daytime, nighttime, weekend, online, and specialized programs within the national prison system.

In contrast, the Tarapacá region of Chile is facing a shortage of school vacancies. Leonardo Gálvez Castro, the regional Secretary of Education, reported that despite the addition of 850 new spots in Alto Hospicio, the system is at its limit with 87,284 students enrolled. Gálvez noted that the region currently lacks available vacancies, leaving some children without access to schooling. The majority of the regional student population is concentrated in the Iquique Province, which accounts for 71.4% of enrollments.
