Germany and Austria schools face rising enrollment and teacher shortages

As the new school year begins across Germany and Austria, educational authorities are managing a combination of rising student numbers and persistent teacher shortages. In Bavaria, student enrollment has reached its highest level in 15 years, with approximately 1.77 million students. Despite this growth, a hiring moratorium in the public sector means teacher numbers remain stable, forcing some schools to rely on voluntary overtime to cover gaps.

In Baden-Württemberg and the Karlsruhe region, officials report varying levels of staffing success. While some areas have successfully filled available positions, rural regions like the North Black Forest continue to struggle with vacancies. Meanwhile, in Vorarlberg, Austria, authorities noted that while many positions were filled, many applicants did not meet the required professional profiles.

Safety remains a primary concern for law enforcement during the transition. Police in several German regions, including Bavaria and the Allgäu, have launched campaigns such as ‘Sicher zur Schule – Sicher nach Hause’ to increase patrols and monitor traffic near schools. These efforts aim to prevent accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists, particularly as child traffic accidents have seen recent increases in certain areas due to the rise of e-scooters and pedelecs.
