EDUCAUSE conference highlights quantum security and leadership challenges
At the EDUCAUSE annual conference, higher education leaders identified critical priorities for navigating an era of rapid technological and social change. The 2027 EDUCAUSE Top 10 list highlights urgent issues such as future-proofing students against volatile employment markets, managing research funding constraints, and addressing demographic shifts in enrollment.
A significant technical concern raised is the looming threat of quantum computing. Experts warned that “Q-Day”—the point when quantum power can easily break current encryption models—could arrive as early as 2030. This poses a risk to higher education data storage, potentially allowing bad actors to decode previously encrypted information.
To mitigate these risks, IT leaders recommend that institutions begin implementing quantum-resistant algorithms and evaluating data classifications immediately. Procurement officers are encouraged to prioritize vendors that support these new security standards to protect sensitive research and health data.
